Taylor Swift’s “The Man” Calls Out the Double Standards of Society

“I’m so sick of running as fast as I can | Wondering if I’d get there quicker if I was a man | And I’m so sick of them coming at me again |  if a woman was to do this | she’d be ridiculed to death | Cause if I was a man, then I’d be the man”, sings Taylor Swift in her latest song titled, “The Man”. Calling out the double standards of society and the entertainment world, she is singing about something women know all too well and the music video also shows her in her dressed as a man complete with facial prosthetics, depicting her as the man, literally speaking.

Even famous people like her don’t get away with showing some emotions and behavior and that many things are only acceptable among men

As someone who had pleaded to own her music for years, Swift is showing that she can never be silenced in her unapologetic song which is being lauded by fans the world over, not to mention social media. A song that is marked by its frustration and anger, she is telling people that even famous people like her don’t get away with showing some emotions and behavior and that many things are only acceptable among men. Garnering millions of tweets, “The Man” is becoming the go-to song of people who want to vent out their frustrations at those in power and how they have become victims of autocratic regimes. Swift is known for her documentarian music and has been singing about her life from breakups to politics and is now leaving no stone unturned in this one and even targeted Leonardo DiCaprio who is known for his lavish parties and young girlfriends. He is quite famous for not dating anyone above the age of 25.

As a teen star, she did feel a lot of pressure to be that sweet southern girl

Swift herself is no stranger to battling “The Man”. In 2013, she reported radio DJ David Mueller for sexually assaulting her and won the case even though Mueller sued her for defamation; she counter-sued him for sexual assault. In an interview with The Guardian, she said, “Having dealt with a few of them, narcissists basically subscribe to a belief system that they should be able to do and say whatever the hell they want, whenever the hell they want to. And if we — as anyone else in the world, but specifically women — react to that, well, we’re not allowed to. We’re not allowed to have a reaction to their actions.” She also added that society expects women to be polite all the time and growing up in the limelight as a teen star, she did feel a lot of pressure to be that sweet southern girl. However, “something snapped,” she said and has never looked back since.
